Homansbyen

KRISTIANIA H (Homansbyen), sub-office with address Josefinegaten 22, opened its doors 1891-11-1. Circular 28, 1891-10-31. Name changed to Oslo H in 1925; the office closed for good 1997-04-04. Today there's a Peppes Pizza restaurant where the post office once used to be, if I am not mistaken, or was it a RIMI grocery store?

Wide H (1891, Throndsen, wide H) (3)
Throndsen came up with two fancy designs for the two branch offices that opened in the fall of 1891. In this original issue, the litra H, placed at the bottom, is wider than in the later, narrow H issued when the need for a second postmark arose.

In use until mid-day 31 December 1924.

Narrow H (1892, Throndsen) (1)
Issued 1892-03-11, just over four months after the Homansbyen branch office opened. I guess the traffic at this popular PO was high, and the need for a separate canceller to be used for registered and insured mail arose.

In use until the name change of 1924/25. In engraver Rui's recall order books the date 1M 31 XII 24 is struck — believed to be its last day of use.

Swiss H (1911, CC&S) (4)
Beginning July 1911, Christiania Chablon- & Stempelfabrik is back in the comfort zone of the postal administration; Throndsen is out in the cold again. Money, you know.
This cancel quickly breaks in the outer circle. Primarily used on banco mail and parcel post, but found on all sorts of mail pieces and documents.
Delivered on 1911-11-16.

Unknown 1914-9-18 (0)
Langangen has listed a KRISTIANIA H as delivered on 1914-9-18. Nothing is noted for engraver, and I have to question this entry. Is it possible that this is the delivery of a cancelling machine to Kra H? More likely, however, is that Langangen has a typo, and that the correct is Kristiania KAMPEN -- a branch office to open on 1914-10-1.

Delivered on 1919-9-6.

Rolling Parcelpost (1910, Kjeldaas) (0)
Homansbyen received a rolling parcelpost cancel on 1910-9-24.
HOMANSBY Krag Machine Cancels (4)
The records show that a cancelling machine was stationed at Kristiania H in the early years of the 1910-20 decade, but no identifying markers have been found by collectors (yet). We do know, however, that there were complaints about this machine; it supposedly ruined the letters...
In 1920/21, however, a machine was sent to H with the bottom text HOMANSBY. The machine supposedly had served at the main PO Brevavdelingen, and was refurbished by Krag before being shipped to H (Langangen 1994, 69).This cancel is also known with the text cliché STØTT NORSK ARBEID in 1924.
